Good morning, Lakeland! Starting this week, I'm doing something a little different with this space: instead of a broad roundup, each week I'm going to take you into one Lakeland neighborhood and cover one thing making news around Central Florida. I'm here to show you everything you need to know about this town, one corner at a time, so let's start with Dixieland.

Neighborhood Spotlight: Dixieland

If you like a neighborhood with actual history and character, Dixieland is one of my favorites to show buyers. It dates back to 1907, and the historic district still has more than 500 original buildings, mostly bungalows and Craftsman-style homes built between 1920 and 1940. Homes here run a wide range, from cozy 600-square-foot cottages up to 4,000-square-foot properties, and the median sale price over the past year has been right around $299,000, up a few percent from the year before.

What makes Dixieland stand out isn't just the architecture. It's genuinely walkable, which is rare in Lakeland. It ranks as one of the more walkable neighborhoods in the city, and the Lake-to-Lake Bikeway runs right through it along Cresap Street, connecting you to a network of trails that link nine lakes across 26 miles. Florida Avenue through Dixieland has turned into a real corridor of its own, with specialty restaurants, coffee shops, and the murals from the Dixieland Art Infusion project. If you want a taste of old Lakeland, Reececliff Family Diner, the oldest eatery in town, is right here too.

This is a neighborhood that tends to draw young professionals and families who want character and walkability over a big yard, along with folks who appreciate historic homes and don't mind a little renovation project. As of this week there were roughly a dozen homes actively listed in Dixieland, so there's real inventory to look at if this sounds like your kind of street.

One race worth watching: incumbent School Board member Kay Fields is being challenged by Sam Neelam.
